Challenges from Within

Standard

Each person will summarize the last 2 components (Social & Emotional Issues and Profiles of the Gifted) of today’s training in three sentences or less. Each person will need to share their summary with the rest of the group. It’s okay to refine your summary after getting input from others. Now that everyone at the table has shared, synthesize everyone’s thinking to come up with one 3-sentence summary. Add a fourth sentence, “This is important because . . .” Blog Splash the group summary in the comment section of this post.

  1. Gifted learners have many social and emotional issues that challenge them. Their challenges may overlap. There are different ways to categorize gifted learners, however they are not all alike. This is important because we need to understand how each student is unique in order to meet their specific learning needs.

  2. Gifted and Talented students need to be challenged and understood. Incorporate topics of the their interest. By identifying GT portfolios, we can better understand how to reach them. This is important because we want our GT students to be successful.

  3. GT students exhibit social and emotional needs, and do not fit into a cookie cutter mold. Each students possesses a unique set of qualities, behaviors, needs, and feelings that both parents and teachers can recognize and cater too.

  4. The visual, notes, and scenarios helped us learn about the differences in types of learners. This will help us become better teachers and help us reach each student and help identify each child’s needs. When we identify our student then we can connect to them stronger and help them excel farther.

  5. After reading the social and emotional issues of gifted learners, we realized that not all students will fall into one category. A common emotion in gifted learners is frustration or boredom due to teachers not challenging them or that they have not been identified. Many of the profiles struggled socially or emotionally. This is important because we need to know how to differentiate our classrooms appropriately.

  6. This is important because, we need to understand where each students is coming from and how to address their needs both in and out of the classroom.

  7. There are 8 types of social and emotional issues that gifted and talented learners can face. By profiling students it helps educators better understand where their students are. By better understanding where their students are teachers can prepare lessons that engage the different types of learners. This is important because we want all our students to succeed.

  8. GT student come from different backgrounds and different levels of giftedness types. They need just as much support as the average struggling students in the classroom. If students are not serviced correctly they will exhibit poor behavior. This is important because it helps us as teachers to better identify them and to best meet their needs so they can be successful.

  9. Students demonstrate multiple characteristics of social and emotional issues. It would be highly beneficial for teachers to be aware of their student’s backgrounds including socioeconomic status, home life and any other learning challenges there may be.This is important because we need to be able to understand them to meet the various needs of our students.

  10. Gifted learners can look different than what you might expect. Not all gifted learners are successful. Their home lives can burden and direct their behavior and learning. This is important because the GT classroom is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.

  11. GT learners are a very heterogeneous group; there are many types of “looks” for a gifted learner. We have those those who overload their plate and are perfectionists at everything they do, and then we have the students who appear to be disengaged and do not care, when really, they are equally as gifted and “smart,” there passions just lie elsewhere.

  12. Gifted learners generally fall into certain types and categories based on academic achievement and within those types they have various social and emotional issues. Their social and emotional issues span the range from overstimulated and overcommitted to underachieving and narrow interest.

Social and emotional issues go hand-in-hand with gifted student profiles.Their social/emotional status is a factor that determines their profile.For instance, a highly sensitive student could become an underground student (Type III) because of social deficiency. This is important because it can give insight to your students.

  14. We can use this information to know what to expect from the diverse population of GT students. Knowing what to expect will also help us prepare academically and emotionally for the students, as well as, ourselves as teachers. This is important because we need to know how to work with these students and respect their needs and feelings in order to keep them engaged in learning.

  15. The Profiles of Gifted Learners shed light on the subgroups of gifted students within the gifted community as well as ways to serve and identify these individuals. Students’ varied backgrounds may seem problematic to some but to a well equipped teacher will welcome them as light bulbs shining daily with varied colors representing the myriad of learners. GT students can have social and emotional issues that overlap, allowing them to fit into more than one category. This is important because we must first understand what drives GT students to properly serve them.
